Justice League Unlimited: Dark Heart

Ever since signing up for the DC Universe streaming service, I've been doing a rewatch of both Justice League animated series, the original and Unlimited. I've been making screencaps and gifs of my favorites scenes.

The 10th episode of Unlimited, Dark Heart, was written by Warren Ellis. It bears all of his trademarks:

• A fascination with technology and science fiction - in this case, alien nano tech.
• A simple way of explaining the threat: the entire planet about to overrun by nano bots!
• A clever way of turning a relatively obscure/unused character into a hero who can deal with this problem: Ray Palmer, The Atom.
• A good deal of light hearted humor.

Wonder Woman kicks a lot of ass in this episode. She's aggressive in fighting off the bots and transporting Ray Palmer to the ship containing the "Dark Heart" of the bots. At first she carries The Atom in her hand and then transfers him to a location any fan would love (she needs to punch things without damaging him).

In addition to the usual Justice League team, many other second and third tier DC Universe characters show up. One of my favorites has always been the Western character Vigilante. This singing cowboy crimefighter traded in a horse for a cycle and that appears here.

The very last scene has the camera pull back so you can see the wide array of DC Comics characters assembled on this team. The Shining Knight, Blue Devil, Vixen, Doc Midnight, Wildcat and many other characters. Even Aztek who was around during the Grant Morrison JLA era.

Firestorm, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Elongated Man by George Perez

Here's the second set of Justice League commissions by George Perez featuring the classic Bronze Age versions of the characters.

Firestorm.  The original version of this character still works the best for me.  A teenager kid with nuclear powers...restrained only by Professor Stein living in his head.  Brilliant.  The best deterrent to Superman in the DC Universe.

Green Arrow.  Nice light and shadow work here.

Black Canary.

Elongated Man.  Love how Perez tangles up this goofy character.  Nuff Said!

Justice League 2012 Commissions by George Perez

Remember the great Gerry Conway / George Perez era of the Justice League?  I love that one and enjoy perusing those back issues when I run across them.  Recently George Perez did some commissions that evoke that era...

Greg Capullo Variant Covers (and pencils) for Flash and Justice League

Greg Capullo has knocked me out on his new DC Comics artwork since the reboot occurred.  I've enjoyed his rendition of Batman a lot, but I think if we get to see him tackle some of the other DC characters, we're in for a treat.  These variant covers are good examples.



Flash #2 featured Barry Allen warping through space and time.  I love the speed force lighting, the dial on the bottom (blowing out the scale OMG), and the colors are really good as well.

Justice League #3 features Capullo's take on DC's pantheon.  He's got a great take on Superman and Wonder Woman. 

The pencils to JL #3.  I really would love to see Capullo draw the Flash after he's done with Batman.  Hopefully he will stay at DC Comics for a long time.  Nuff Said!
